The Gan people in Burkina Faso, still adhering to their traditional way of life and beliefs, have a unique sculptural style, rich in rituals and symbolism.
These pendants or peats, in fact, are endowed with protective power. Nevertheless, the artists were particularly attentive to detail and sophistication. Spirals are symbols of eternity and probably a sign of royal status.
> Snake Torfan: Snakes are the central theme of Ghanaian fiction. Torfana can have up to 10 heads, which symbolizes the degree of his power. These peats protect the family and the crop.
> Crocodile Torfan: The largest parts belonged to the king, often decorated with a crocodile, a symbol of strength and patience, and the thought that they conceal the knowledge of ancestors. Thus, crocodiles also protect the souls of the dead.
> The chameleon is less commonly found in sculptural pendants because it represents knowledge and wisdom and is therefore intended for wise people or community healers.
